Marie Hugo

€20.00

Exhibition catalog of artist Marie Hugo, a French painter, engraver, lithographer, visual artist, daughter of Jean Hugo, great-granddaughter of Victor Hugo; she lives and works between London and the Camargue where she was born.

At the age of sixteen, she entered the École des Beaux-Arts in Montpellier and received training in engraving and lithography while working alongside her father, Jean Hugo. She later moved to Hong Kong where she learned to paint murals for large public commissions. Back in Europe, inspired by the landscapes and art of the Far East, she painted large Indian ink washes. In a search for balance between full and empty her work oscillates between figuration and abstraction. At the heart of her art are trees, leaves, bamboo, lotus, pebbles, insects, octopus. She creates installations. Her “forests of light” are composed of large canvases while a metal mesh sculpture “Medusa” seems to play with water, air and light. Her works are present in several private collections in Europe and the United States.
