Marta Sammartini Scupltures

€38.00

A beautiful and extensive catalog of the artwork of Marta Sammartini.

Born into a noble family, heir to the Balbi Valier family, she divided her time between Venice (where she spent her youth) and the family villa in Pieve di Soligo (where she set up her studio). She demonstrated an aptitude for drawing and sculpture as a child and from 1913 she attended the studio of Annibale De Lotto, who held the chair of sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts.

In the sculptor's early works, the search for truth and a figurative bent predominated, revealing the influence of the masters. During the Great War, the artist focused on depicting the human suffering she was witnessing. Between 1917 and 1940 Sammartini participated in a number of major exhibitions.

In the last period of her life, having entered the Franciscan Third Order, she mainly produced works with sacred themes. The artist died in 1954.

Text by Nico Stringa, Hetty Meyric Hughes. Photographs by Vito Vecellio.
